Class Information
Classroom Theme
This year our theme is “Sail into Kindergarten.” I am looking forward to a fantastic year with you and your children! Each child will have a job on our crew and will be responsible for helping our class run smoothly each day. Each week we will have a Captain (student of the week). They will be sent home with a poster to complete for their spotlight. In addition, they will have special privileges throughout the week.
Curriculum:
Utah has adopted the new Common Core which can be found at:
www.corestandards.org
Reading:
We will be using
Rigby Literacy
and
Literacy by Design
. A variety of reading readiness activities will be used to stimulate your child’s interest in reading including guided reading (leveled ability based groups) and whole group instruction.
Math:
Standards Based Math is the basis of our math program. The children will develop math skills through the use of hands-on manipulatives, daily group activities, and math games
.
Language Arts:
Each child should be able to write his/her full name, use the correct pencil grip, and be able to form all letters correctly. The following skills will be stressed: listening skills, speaking skills, sound discrimination, simple directions, and personal knowledge.
Science, Social Studies, and Health:
Many units will be taught this year. The following are some examples: Good Health, Five Senses, Animals, Seasons, Weight and Density, Good Manners, and Citizenship. At the end of the year we complete a unit on butterflies where we hatch our own and monitor the changes (life cycles).
Music and Art:
We will have music daily in one form or another. We will sing, dance, and use rhythm instruments. In art, the children will do a lot of cutting, coloring, and pasting. We will use paints, glitter, and many other art media.
Physical Education:
The children will learn to jump rope, skip, exercise, and dance to increase large motor coordination.
Learning Centers:
This is a time when the children are in small group activities. Each center is designed to help children learn cooperation, share responsibility, and grow in their academic skills.
Birthdays:
Each child’s birthday will be celebrated in class. Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the year during the last month of school. As your child’s birthday approaches, we will set up a time for you to come and bring a treat (if you choose). As per school policy, the treat must be store bought. Also, please make sure the treats are not too messy (cupcakes with dyed frosting stain the carpet). Due to classroom allergies, please bring treats that do not contain nuts due to classroom allergies.
Recess:
Students will go to one 10 to 15-minute recess a day. They will be expected to obey the school playground rules at all times or they will lose recess privileges. As a Kindergarten team, the other teachers and I have agreed that we will not be having snacks during recess. If your child needs a snack for medical purposes please bring a note from his or her doctor stating the reason.
Transportation:
If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus or you wish for your child to ride a different bus than usual, you must send a written note or contact the office at 766-6440. Do not rely on your child to tell us this information. If no written note or phone call is received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.

Homework
Each student will need a plastic homework folder, which can be purchased at Walmart for $.50 (see me for details). At the beginning of each month, I will send the folder home with assignments in it that will review the concepts we learn in class. The work is to be done at home and returned at the end of the month. There will be rewards for children who complete and return their homework
on the last day of the month
. Students will also be expected to read/listen to books for 20 minutes each night and to practice sight words. If the folder is lost or damaged please promptly replace it with another.

Attendance and Discipline
Attendance:
Class Times: T-F 12:35-3:30
Early Out Days: Every Monday will be early out days. M 12:35-2:30
Each child is expected to be in school daily. However, PLEASE do not send your child to school when they are ill. Absences or tardies require a note from parents. District regulations require a responsible person to sign in at the office when taking a child out of school.
Discipline:
This year my goal as a teacher is to create a positive and engaging learning environment where every child has the opportunity to learn and explore. This can only be achieved by eliminating inappropriate and disruptive behavior in the classroom. I value positive interactions with every child and will use positive reinforcement as I teach.
There is a small class treasure chest that will hold a reward for all of the students. The reward will be anything from extra recess to a small treat. Our class must earn an allotted amount of feet on our treasure map in order to reach the “treasure”. Feet are obtained through hard work and positive choices on an individual and whole group level.
If you would like to take the treasure chest home and provide a “treasure” for the whole class then please contact me or sign up on the treasure chest sign up sheet and I will send the chest home with your child.
Please go over the class rules with your child. Each week a small note will be sent home with one or two children noting their positive behavior observed in class. I frequently praise positive behavior in the classroom and specifically mention who it was that earned a “foot” on the treasure map for our class. Students who misbehave will have two warnings. If they get past two warnings, they will miss five minutes of recess or centers. If your child gets to this point, I will contact you and ask that you follow up with him or her at home.
